It is now illegal for veterinarians to declaw cats in California as a result of a new law banning the procedure. The state officially outlawed the practice after Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 867 into law, which bans “the performance of a tendonectomy, onychectomy, or any type of claw removal on a feline within the practice of veterinary medicine, surgery, and dentistry…. for any reason other than a therapeutic” or medically necessary purpose.
